This year, Novartis celebrates Disability Pride Month for the first time! We kicked off the month by raising the Disability Pride flag on our Basel, Switzerland campus accompanied by members of our Disability ERG's, DEI community and sponsors. The flags will remain in place for the entire month of July, and we hope their presence will spark conversations around disability in all its forms, both apparent and non-apparent, temporary, and permanent. Only by having open and curious conversations around disability will start to break down the stigmas and misconceptions associated with Disability in the workplace and in wider society. This World Refugee Day we want to highlight the Novartis Giving and Volunteering program which has redesigned and scaled our refugee response. This includes a commitment we made in 2023 to hire and train at least 150 refugees over the coming three years. In supporting our communities, the program engages with a wide range of strategic partners such as Switzerland for UNHCR, and various UN agencies and organizations like the International Rescue Committee, Save the Children, the Swiss Red Cross, and the Tent Partnership for Refugees to name a few. However, the response to the refugee crisis is just one example of the far-reaching impact of this program. Through employee giving, community initiatives and our skills-based volunteering program, our people can donate to and engage with partner organizations across 63 causes and beneficiary areas. This is one of the most inclusive programs, with no upper limit on the number of giving or volunteering hours and volunteering permitted on company time. Svitlana, originally from Ukraine shares why she’s so passionate about helping others find their footing, especially refugees like her. Hi there, I’m Beatriz and I work in the Talent Acquisition team as a Strategic Talent Sourcer. When I was growing up in Brazil, I dreamed of becoming a doctor or dentist, however, as I got older, I soon realised that I could not handle the sight of blood. 6 years ago, I changed direction and joined Novartis as a Human Resources Business Professional intern. It is rewarding to be part of a thriving community united in our mission to enhance people's lives'. And a community that is truly collaborative. In my time, I’ve worked in many departments, connected with different leaders, and I am inspired when I see the impact my work has in building strong connections with our purpose of putting the patient at the centre of what we do. Have you heard of our EPIC Pledge? Meet Anjali, Head of People & Organization (HR) who wants to tell you more about how we are actively supporting equal pay at Novartis. We strongly believe in equal pay for women and men for work of equal value. To support this, in 2018 we were one of the first pharma companies to join the United Nations Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC) which is committed to helping to close the overall gender pay gap. To sustain our progress, we renewed our EPIC pledge in 2023 to remain committed to maintaining gender balance in management, and to reviewing our human resources practices. Addressing equity in healthcare starts with ensuring equity and inclusion in our organization and with our people. By choosing inclusion, we reimagine what is possible together.
This Pride Month, we want to spotlight the impact of our Pride Employee Resource Groups, who play a critical role in connecting and supporting our global LGBTQI+ and ally community at Novartis. By providing a safe space to share lived experiences, they help spark ideas that create positive change for our people and patients. Through these grassroots efforts and ongoing collaborations with organizations such as Stonewall and myGwork - LGBT+ professionals, we are committed to driving LGBTQI+ equity and inclusion together.
