Localized power projects that can operate independently or alongside the main grid are no longer a niche technology. They’re playing an increasingly important role as AI investment explodes. S&P Global estimates that roughly 30 gigawatts of on-site power projects will be needed by 2030 – about a quarter of new data center power demand. That’s opening the door for companies such as Scale. In a few years, EQT-backed Scale Microgrids has gone from developing $5m to $150m power projects for commercial and industrial facilities and universities to completing a single data-center deal that tripled its revenue.
We are thrilled to announce that Scale has officially acquired Reload, a premier powered land development platform. This strategic move combines Scale’s expertise in on-site energy systems with Reload’s ability to site and permit gigawatt-scale data center campuses. This builds on our recent momentum, including a contract for a multi-hundred megawatt on-site energy system for a leading hyperscaler. We are one of the few companies actively building off-grid energy systems at this scale today.
Accurate intel from S&P Global here - distributed energy providers, including Scale, are indeed finding a "substantial foothold" in the data center space. One underappreciated-but-important reason why, as highlighted by our VP of Data Center Solutions Duncan S. Campbell: "When you're an IPP, your customer is just the power market ... in [the microgrid] space, you have an actual customer, a corporation that is depending on you to keep the lights on, that you're working on construction and maintenance with and want to leave happy."

After looking at data from our Northeast microgrids after the heatwave a couple of weeks ago we found we provided 100% of power to our customers with no outages throughout the record high temperatures, while helping the grid and generating revenue for our customers through emergency capacity events.
