The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) recently recognized the work & achievements of exceptional charter public schools, leaders, & advocates with the prestigious Hart Vision Award at the 2024 California Charter Schools Conference. The award is given annually to individuals and organizations with outstanding records of leadership and excellence in furthering California’s charter public school movement. We are so excited to share that our very own Brenda Plazola, tutor and longtime educator at Rocketship Fuerza Community Prep, has received the 2024 Teacher of the Year Hart Vision Award! Brenda has been an educator at Rocketship Fuerza for 10 years, since the school’s doors first opened in 2014. She started as an Ops member & made a great impact on students and the Fuerza community as an Individualized Learning Specialist. Now, as an academic interventionist, Brenda has been instrumental in unleashing the potential of all of our Rocketeers. She never hesitates to collaborate with all teachers across spaces to support all types of learners. As Principal Riley St. Marie puts it, “Our community is stronger with the dedication from Plazola.” CCSA produced a special video series featuring the exemplary charter school leaders who received the 2024 Hart Vision Award, including Brenda. You can watch the video below. Congratulations, Brenda!
Exciting news: Rocketship United Academy has officially been named a Reward School by the Tennessee Department of Education for the second year in a row! Tygima Steele and Ben Harp, thank you for leading RUA to earn the state’s highest honor for academic performance. Read more about how we’re closing opportunity gaps for our Rocketeers:
“We want to live beautiful lives over a long time, try new things, and grow up to have beautiful families… Young people should get to share their thoughts and their voices so people can hear what we have to say. I do my part to let people know how we don’t like the violence.” River, a third grader at Rocketship Rise Academy, passionately articulated these sentiments during their Peace Walk Against Gun Violence. Learn more about Rocketship Rise’s partnership with the Woodland Terrace community and their combined efforts aimed at fostering a safer environment for all.
“I am so proud that we have a strong school community who stands with us to share and contribute and participate in the traditions that we have. Celebrating Tết at school will be part of their childhood memories probably for the rest of their life. So thank you for creating this experience for them at Rocketship.” As educators, we know it is important for students to see themselves in what we celebrate year-round, which is why we put so much effort into incorporating our families into our schools and celebrating the culture of our local communities. At Rocketship Schools, we're deeply committed to serving ALL students, unleashing their potential regardless of their needs, exceptionalities, or differences. We are incredibly proud of the fact that “all” truly means ALL at Rocketship. Our educators' dedication to all of our students doesn’t go unnoticed and often completely changes the lives of our Rocketeers. Meet Jake. Like many of our students, Jake is a student with exceptionalities. When the time came to find a school for their son, his parents were faced with a difficult decision - who would they trust with their son’s education? They wanted to ensure Jake would have an inclusive and joyful experience where his learning difference would be recognized, supported, and celebrated. And then they found Rocketship Mosaic.
The most exciting part about our organization being in its 16th year of operation is seeing all of our Rocketeers grow up and flourish, with some of them coming back to Rocketship to continue this great work. One such forever Rocketeer is Daniella Martinez. In 2019, Daniella shared with us how excited she was to begin her post-secondary educational journey at Cal Poly Pomona, a prestigious university. Now, we are blessed and fortunate to have Daniella back home as a learning interventionist at her alma mater, Rocketship Sí Se Puede, where she is excited to be working with students just like her.
