Memorial Health, the premier provider of healthcare in the vastly expanding region of Marysville and Union County, will acquire the iconic Dave’s Pharmacy in Marysville, the Memorial Health Board of Trustees has announced. The purchase unites two long-standing local healthcare institutions and ensures that Dave’s, which has served area residents since 1997, remains locally owned and operated. Memorial will take over ownership of the pharmacy later this summer and will retain both the current name and location.

Memorial Health has posthumously nominated Shawn Millen, CPhT, as their nominee for the 2024 Ohio Hospital Association’s (OHA) Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to one Ohio healthcare employee who personifies leadership, reflects the mission and values of his or her organization, routinely performs work in an exemplary manner, and gives back to the community. Shawn, who passed away unexpectedly in October 2023 after a brief illness, was a Certified Pharmacy Technician/Purchasing Specialist at Memorial Hospital for the last 14 years. In his role, he had a passion to ensure Memorial had adequate supplies of medications and associated devices. During the COVID pandemic, hospital pharmacies across the nation were dealing with countless product shortages, recalls, and backorders. An optimist at heart, Shawn knew he wanted to do his part. He dug deep into his networks, tapping into alternative sources and contacts, effectively securing what patients needed. So successful, he earned the nickname “Radar,” as he was able to track down nearly any item required by the Memorial Hospital team.
At its core, Memorial Health has a heart for the communities and residents it serves. During the holidays, the healthcare organization takes the opportunity to celebrate the work of a local young artist, and in addition, contributes to charities making a difference in the region. For fifteen years, Memorial Health has undertaken an annual holiday card design contest, traditionally rotating contests with local schools. This year, the health system wanted to focus on the children of their growing team of 1,100+ employees. Emmie Arnal, daughter of Kayce Arnal, a nurse within the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at Memorial, won this year’s Memorial Health Holiday Card Design Contest. Emmie is a fifth grader at Creekview Intermediate School and will receive a $100 gift card from Memorial for her artistic endeavors. The Memorial Health Board of Trustees also recently voted to contribute to the holiday efforts of local community organizations who help Union and Champaign County residents in need. Melanie Ziegler, Memorial Health Vice President of Community Engagement, shares that nine non-profits will receive the holiday-time donations, including Care Train of Union County, Community Christmas in Urbana, the Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Hope Center, Milford Center Food Pantry, North Union Personal Needs Pantry, Oasis of Mercy Food Pantry of Mechanicsburg, Plain City Daily Needs Assistance, and The Caring Kitchen of Urbana.
Memorial Health has announced the availability of Galleri®, a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood test that can detect a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer, to eligible patients of Memorial Medical Group primary or specialty care practices. Memorial is the first health system in the region to offer the test to patients. “Screening for cancer is important, because when cancer is found in early stages, treatment is more likely to be successful. However, many cancers are still detected too late, after a person develops symptoms, and the cancer has spread,” comments Kevin P. Henzel, MD, Memorial Internal Medicine, and the physician who championed for availability of the Galleri test at Memorial. “We are thrilled to offer our Memorial primary and specialty care patients the Galleri blood test, which can screen for multiple cancers at once, many of which lack recommended screening tests today. The test can also alert you to hard-to-detect, aggressive, and often fatal types of cancer like pancreatic, ovarian, and esophageal cancers. Memorial believes multi-cancer early detection tests like Galleri are the new front for the war against cancer,” adds Henzel.

Becker’s Hospital Review has released the 2023 edition of its “Great Community Hospitals” list and Marysville-based Memorial Hospital has been named to the list. According to the announcement, the designation from Beckers indicates Memorial was selected because the organization is: * known for clinical excellence, compassionate care, economic impact on their communities, and more. * honored by top ranking and award agencies for their stellar patient outcomes and their performance in specialty care services. * a leader who shows above-and-beyond commitment to their communities. Their expertise helps expand care access to patients who would otherwise face barriers such as cost or distance. The “Great Community Hospitals” list celebrates ten hospitals in Ohio with entities representing communities in Central Ohio, as well as the Cincinnati and Cleveland areas.
Reinforcing its long-standing commitment to patient safety and quality enhancements, Memorial Hospital has announced the organization has earned a prestigious national rating for safe patient care. Memorial Hospital has earned a five-star quality rating in patient care by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) summary star ratings. CMS rates hospitals from one to five stars, based on their safety, efficiency, and patient experience. “Our teams at Memorial are honored to receive the highest possible rating of five stars for quality from CMS,” comments Chip Hubbs, President and CEO of Memorial Health. “Memorial is one of only 483 hospitals in the U.S. to earn this designation. Compared to more than 4,600 other hospitals nationwide, only 10% received five stars. Receiving this highly sought after rating demonstrates the continuation of our reputation as a high-performing healthcare system with caring, expert team members, physicians, and providers.”
