Developed in the late 1950s by engineer and inventor Miles "Lowell" Edwards and surgeon Dr. Albert Starr, the Starr-Edwards valve was successfully implanted by Dr. Starr for the first time 64 years ago today. The Starr-Edwards valve marked the beginning of the modern era of heart valve disease treatment, laying the groundwork for numerous advancements in both mechanical and tissue replacement heart valves. We’re proud to continue the patient-focused work that first began with these two trailblazing innovators more than half a century ago. hashtag#Innovation hashtag#MedTech hashtag#HeartValveDisease

Patrick was born with a heart murmur and was told he’d never be able to play contact sports and would need regular heart check-ups throughout his life. He eventually found his passion in competitive swimming. He went on to swim for a USA Swimming club and played water polo in high school and college. During one of his regular check-ups, his care team discovered his bicuspid aortic valve needed to be replaced. Patrick and his surgeon opted for an Edwards valve. Patrick is now back to swimming and has become a certified U.S. Masters Swimming coach, competing in his first national meet since his valve replacement. ❤️ We’re grateful to Patrick and all the patients who attended this year’s #PatientExperience for sharing their stories, which help us improve experiences for future patients. Stay tuned this month as we share more stories from inspiring patients whose lives have been touched by our technology. #WhatMakesOurHeartsBeat #PatientStories #HeartHealth #HeartOfInnovation
Edwards Lifesciences CVP for Global Supply Chain and Quality Joe Nuzzolese this morning joined the Valencian president, Carlos Mazón, and the mayoress of Moncada, Amparo Orts, to announce plans for a future manufacturing facility in Moncada that will employ up to 1,200 people and involve an investment of approximately 150 million euros. The new facility will manufacture Edwards surgical and transcatheter heart valve replacement technologies and will strengthen and add resiliency to the company’s global manufacturing network to better serve its growing European patient population and strengthen Edwards’ ability to serve even more structural heart disease patients around the world. The facility will potentially generate thousands of indirect jobs and opportunities for local businesses in Moncada and the surrounding area. “Edwards has been a part of the Valencian Community for nearly 25 years and continues to be attracted by the vibrancy of the region leading us to make this significant investment in the area,” said Nuzzolese. “I want to thank the government of Spain, and the leaders of Valencia and Moncada for their partnership in making this project possible.”
