Padel and pickleball have firmly entered the mainstream. Once lesser-known racquet sports, they have become global phenomena in recent years, attracting a growing mix of players of all ages and abilities. Their accessibility has been key to this rise – easy to pick up, yet challenging to master, both offer a compelling blend of co-ordination, competition and social connection. This growing popularity is reflected across David Lloyd Clubs, where we are now the UK’s largest padel operator. But what are the differences between the two sports? Padel, a dynamic blend of tennis and squash, is played in doubles on an enclosed court, where the walls come into play and add an extra layer of speed and strategy. It is engaging and highly social, with simple rules that make it easy to pick up while still providing a strong cardiovascular workout. Pickleball, meanwhile, combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a smaller, open court with a slower ball and lighter paddles. This creates a more controlled, tactically astute game. Like padel, it is typically played in doubles, making it particularly suited to players looking for a lower-impact way to stay active
We're proud to officially open our newly transformed David Lloyd Clubs Shrewsbury, following a £11 million investment into health, fitness and wellness in the local community. Our recent launch event brought together members, local partners and community leaders, with the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Cllr Alex Wagner, joining us to mark the occasion. After a 12-month transformation, the Club now offers a premium, all-in-one space for families and individuals, from a state-of-the-art gym, indoor and outdoor pools, and racquets facilities including padel, to boutique studios and our luxurious Spa Retreat. Beyond fitness, the club has been designed to support the way our members live today, with spaces to work, relax and spend time together as a family. A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing the Club to life, and to the Shrewsbury community for such a warm welcome. We’re excited to be part of the area and look forward to what’s to come. #Davidlloydclubs #healthandfitness #wellness

This Sunday is International Women’s Day, and we’re proud to support the hashtag#GiveToGain campaign, especially in its 115th year. For more than a century, International Women’s Day has championed progress. Across our Clubs, we see every day what happens when women back each other in business, from Personal Trainers to General Managers, from the UK to Europe. Our colleagues across the UK and Europe are building careers, growing in confidence, and creating opportunities for others to do the same. Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing videos, stories and advice from team members who have embraced challenges, stepped up into new roles and supported others along the way. Because when women share what they’ve learnt, everyone gains. Progress builds. And more women move forward. When women rise together, we all thrive. Want to hear their stories and read more? Wellbeing has always been central to life at David Lloyd Clubs, and over the past year we’ve continued to strengthen the spaces and experiences that help both our members and teams feel their best. Across our Clubs, we see every day how movement, rest and connection shape people’s lives, whether it’s a morning swim, a favourite class, time spent training, or a moment of calm in the spa. Our members consistently tell us the difference these routines make. 76% say attending their Club helps reduce everyday stresses, while 71% describe their Club as a place where they feel comfortable and relaxed. Others highlight the confidence that comes from being active. 83% agree that exercise at their Club helps them feel good about themselves, and 72% say membership brings a positive sense of balance to their lives. “Wellbeing is personal, and our ambition is to create environments where people feel supported, confident and able to be themselves,” said Michelle Dand, Head of Product & Programming. Alongside our fitness offering, we’ve continued to broaden our approach to wellness. In 2025, this included the launch of our Female Health Initiative and the expansion of class formats designed to support different life stages and needs, such as SPIRIT Pre and Post Natal, BATTLEBOX & Buggies, as well as holistic and wellbeing classes such as SPIRIT Dance Meditation and SPIRIT Sound Bath #DavidLloydClubs#Community#Wellness
As we look back on 2025, one theme shines through every achievement: the strength and spirit of our people. Their energy, care and individuality shape the welcoming environments our members experience every day, and the culture that makes our Clubs such special places to work. “Giving people the right opportunities early on can make a lasting difference,” said Juliett Cattermole, Group People Director. Supporting our people from the very beginning of their careers is a key part of that commitment. Last year, we welcomed the first cohort of our Early Years Degree Apprenticeship, delivered in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire. The programme combines hands-on experience in our Clubs with study towards a Level 6 Chartered Sports Business Management degree, all debt free, giving early-career talent the opportunity to learn, grow and build a future with us. Creating a culture where people feel appreciated is just as important. One of our core values is ‘Thank You’, because we know recognition matters. Throughout the year, Clubs celebrate colleagues who make a difference through our Team Member of the Month awards. At the end of the year, those who go above and beyond are recognised with an overseas trip. This June, our winners will head off to Mexico, a chance to celebrate their contribution and the impact they make every day. #DavidLloydClubs #Community
Today, 9th January, marks ‘Quitters’ Day’ the point in January when New Year’s resolutions are most likely to be abandoned. Research shows that 72% of people don’t expect their resolutions to last the year, and 1 in 3 say they’re less likely to stick with goals that they don’t enjoy That’s why this January, we’re encouraging the nation to rethink wellness by embracing joy and channelling their inner 'Kidult' tapping into the playful hobbies and pastimes we loved as children, and bringing that same energy into how we move today! Our expert trainers have shared Kidulting-inspired gym movements from skipping and hopscotch to tag, monkey bars and bear crawls proving that playful, nostalgic movement can still deliver real physical and mental benefits, without the pressure often associated with New Year workouts. Championing our campaign is TV and Radio Presenter Mark Wright, who was the first to put our Kidulting workouts to the test even trialling our nostalgic ‘JoyRide’ exercise bike prototype, created simply to spark a smile while working up a sweat. And to bring that joy into our clubs, we’ll also be trialling ‘Kidulting’ sessions for both adults only and families. Based in our activity rooms, these sessions will bring guided, playground-inspired activities for our members using familiar retro games like What’s the Time Mr Wolf, Capture the Flag and Stuck in the Mud, designed to support both physical and mental wellbeing in a fun, pressure-free way. #DavidLloydClubs
What makes me most proud to work at David Lloyd Clubs isn’t just what happens inside our Clubs — it’s what happens beyond them. Across the UK and Europe, our Club teams, Club Support colleagues and members have come together to support local communities, charities and causes that truly matter. Thanks to this collective effort, David Lloyd Clubs is proud to have raised £3.3 million for good causes in 2025 — an incredible achievement captured in this video. This work doesn’t happen because it has to. It happens because our people genuinely care. 💙 Care about their communities. Care about each other. Care about using our reach to do good. A huge thank you to everyone who’s played a part so far. The passion and generosity across David Lloyd Clubs is something special — and there’s more to come. #DavidLloydClubs #DLCproud #DoGood #Community #Together #Proud #MakingADifference
