The Sturgeon Community Hospital’s new clinical simulation centre opened earlier this summer thanks entirely to the generous support of the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation. Two years ago, the foundation purchased a high-tech manikin named Grayson, so advanced it can mimic real medical events like breathing, bleeding, sweating, convulsing and speaking; now it has a home in the $1 million donor-funded simulation centre. The centre also provides a dedicated control room, medication space, breakout rooms and equipment storage. Together, this setup enables healthcare teams to train in an immersive environment that closely mirrors real-life hospital settings. “Running a simulation using an electronic manikin in a fully equipped space that mimics a hospital environment helps us recreate the most realistic high-stress scenario possible,” says Clinical Nurse Educator Krista Nunes. Before this space existed, clinical nurse educators often had to improvise, teaching in boardrooms or offices when no clinical areas were available. Now, the simulation centre supports safer, more confident care for patients across the region. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the new simulation centre, including photos from opening day.
