Me postulé en línea. Acudí a una entrevista en Zalando (Berlín) en ago 2024

      Entrevista

This was an absolute waste of time. Do not apply here, for any role. The interview process was long and arduous. There are multiple stages: an initial interview, then a tech screen (python and SQL); then a second tech interview covering the same SQL as well as some maths; then a third tech interview around interpreting data; then a talk with the hiring manager around yoru CV and motivation for the role; then a final culture fit interview. I got through all the stages, but was not offered a role—which is quite surprising, given that the whole process (including communicating with their extremely slow talent acquisition people) took 10+ hours. Overall the company is disorganised: after each round there was a different person to communicate with from the talent people. Tney never personally communicated with you, instead you have to use a calendar app to book your interviews. Nevertheless Zalando feels that it is ok to cancel an interview with less than an hour to spare, and then the intitiative is on you to re-organise even if this new time is inconvenient. It is completely unacceptable to treat candidates with this level of contempt. As regards the interviews themselves: I got 100% of the automated tech test, and passed the two verbal tech interviews. The automated test had 1 python question which was just manipulating pandas, and 2 sql questions; one sql question was on calculating averages, and the other was on finding flight paths (you have to join the table to itself, it's one of those annoying questions). The 1st tech interview had yet more SQL coding (calculting MORE averages); you need to know the HAVING window function and the COLESCE function to pass (though WHY this isn't in the automated coding screen I don't know, it's a complete waste of time to do live sql). Afterwards there were some questions about metrics, and you have to push the interviewers to clarify what they mean in the question about the distribution of the average revenue (they mean the underlying values, and not the metric they give you), and then the spring a 'gotcha' question where they showed a Simpson's paradox dataset for the results of an experiemnt. The second verbal tech interview is all about experiment design and interpreting the results of another scorecard. The experiment design was pretty straightforward, and the scorecard exhibited a sample ratio mismatch. The data was pretty easy to interpret. Then the next couple of interviews with the hiring manager and the culture fit person went fine. They were mostly focussed on my CV. In the end I got an automated email saying 'no job.' I don't know why they insisted I go through all that for nothing, even when the interviewers were even giving positive feedback in the interview! Honestly a complete waste of time, don't even bother applying here.
