1. Prescreening – Offline Coding Challenge The process began with an offline coding challenge. 2. Recruiter Chat After passing the coding challenge, I had a conversation with a recruiter. The recruiter was warm, engaging, and professional. They clearly outlined the upcoming steps and set a positive tone for the process. 3. Live Coding Challenge Next, I participated in a live coding session with one of Yelp’s engineers. This interactive challenge allowed me to showcase my problem-solving skills and receive feedback in real time. 4. Final Stage – 4-Hour Panel Interview The final stage was a 4-hour back-to-back panel interview, which consisted of: 2 Behavioral Interviews: One of these was conducted by an adorable manager who was kind, attentive, and genuinely interested in my experiences. This conversation warmed my heart and left me with a positive impression of them as a person and leader. 1 System Design Interview: Unfortunately, this interview was conducted by someone whose cocky demeanor left me with a bad taste for the company. Rather than fostering a collaborative discussion, the interviewer seemed dismissive and overly critical, which detracted from the experience. 1 Live Coding Interview: A technically challenging but straightforward coding session. Challenges with the Process: Lack of Feedback: After the interviews, I proactively requested feedback but received none. This lack of follow-up felt disrespectful of the time and effort I invested in preparing for the process. Inflexible Scheduling: The 4-hour interview format was extremely tiring and could have been better structured. Breaking it into separate sessions over multiple days would have allowed for more focus and energy during each stage. Suggestions for Improvement Ensure all interviewers approach candidates with professionalism and respect, fostering an environment that reflects the company’s culture. Provide constructive feedback to candidates who request it, respecting the time and effort they’ve put into the process. Consider splitting lengthy panel interviews into smaller, more manageable sessions to reduce fatigue and improve the overall experience.
