      Entrevista

WillowTree's application and interviewing process is misleading and shady. They advertise a "work from anywhere/remote" option and relocation assistance, but it's a bait-and-switch so they have access to a larger applicant pool. If you're not local or willing/valuable enough to relocate, they're not interested. All my interviewers except for one higher up were "work from near/local". First, I applied to a "Mid-level Front-end Developer" role, but when a recruiter followed up, the title changed to "Platform Software Engineer (Web)". I asked about this in the first phone call and was told it was the same position. I asked the same question during the next round on a different day and was told they never had a mid-level front-end developer position. I assume this is so that more people apply due to two different job posts/titles (larger applicant pool). Earnestly, I asked again in the final 3rd and 4th interviews and was told, again, it was the same position. Both job postings remained on their website. Second, I completed their "Name Game" project in React before the actual interview so that I was prepared. Mind you, they weren't asking for it to be completed. It was supposed to be a collaborative session during the interview and I offered to use a stripped down version so that we could collaborate, but the interviewer and shadower both said the completed version was fine. I told them if I re-developed the project, I'd probably opt to use Context as state management. However, when we were collaborating, the two interviewers (two levels above this position) didn't know how to implement it. After that day's interview, I refactored and added it in less than 30 minutes. Finally, after meeting about 11 people in total over the initial follow-up email, first 45 minute phone call, first collaborative technical interview, and the final two days of 7 rounds of technical and behavioral rounds, I received an email 2 business days later saying that I would not be moving forward due to "allocation/company needs" and was offered feedback if I wanted it. I followed up asking for feedback since I proved that I was more than capable of completing the tasks required for this position. I received no technical feedback and was told that they no longer could hire for their "work from anywhere/remote" branch and only could hire locals or people willing to relocate. I followed up again and asked if I was open to relocating, then would I have an offer. I was told they'd have to speak with the VP of Engineering to see if they'd consider my candidacy for their "work from near" branch. I mean, I just went through all those hoops and you guys don't know if I qualify? I didn't reply at this point. I completed the Name Game app in React and had a working demo during the interview. I completed all technical/coding rounds. I received no technical feedback and in the end, all they could tell me was that they couldn't move forward because I wasn't local and in my initial application I put that I was not open to relocating. To future applicants: Do not waste your time applying here unless you are local. Even then, I'd be cautious. To the talent/recruiting team: Do better. Be transparent and don't waste people's time.

      Preguntas de entrevista [1]

      Pregunta 1

Name Game application development. Using their employee API, Figma designs, and list of requirements, create a game to match an employee's name to their headshot. After the interview, I repurposed it to use celebrities instead of their staff and added it to my portfolio of side projects. Experience with accessibility? Second round of collaborative session was adding keyboard-only navigation to the app. Model a deck of cards and how you'd shuffle them. Model the data you'd need for an e-commerce shop and single product page.

We are sorry that you did not have a good experience interviewing with us. We strive to provide a great candidate experience which includes a thorough, but quick interview process, timely responses, and candid feedback on interviews when requested. We are not trying to be misleading about remote work opportunities. Many of our positions have both remote and hybrid (in-office 2 days a week) openings. Unfortunately, current remote openings for web engineers were filled while you were still interviewing with us. I assure you that we do have many team members who are fully remote and it is not a 'bait and switch' to get a larger applicant pool. Although this doesn't resolve your dissatisfaction with the outcome, I did want to explain why things happened the way they did.
