Applied for a Program Coordinator position within a smaller department of the larger Anesthesiology department. The specific position was in a research lab at their South Lake Union location. The lab had a small admin area. I was interviewed by the department manager. He spoke at length about the position and did not ask me any questions until he was done giving a roughly 20 min speech about the work I would be doing. Once he was done, his only question was, "So what do you think? Why do you want to work here?" I gave a few reasons, some of which were listed on the job description, and he cut me off to tell me that my reasons weren't really part of the job. He then continued to speak at length about other aspects of the position and did not ask me any additional questions. What really bothered me was he kept saying, "This position does require a PHD. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to do this." Knowing that he himself was a PHD, along with his boss who I would also be supporting, and that there were no other admin people within the lab - just him, his boss, and the young post-doc/PHD candidate researchers, these comments were extremely off-putting. It made me feel like I would be somehow looked down upon for not having a PHD, and more importantly, it made me feel like he didn't value the skills it would take to excel in the position he was interviewing me for. He was also extremely blase and overall seemed disinterested in the interview process. I was asked back for a second interview, but I declined.
