      Entrevista para Solution Architect

Me postulé a través de una recomendación de un empleado. El proceso tomó 5 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Tableau Software (Seattle, WA) en oct 2013

      Entrevista

I interviewed twice for a Solution Architect role that paid up to $145-160k total comp ($105-120k base, plus ~10-15% bonus, plus restricted stock units that would vest over four years) with up to 80% travel required. (This is what HR told me in the first interview.) I share this info in the interest of transparency so that others going for the same role may know what compensation range to expect. Both interviews appeared to go very well and I was promised two deeply technical interviews plus a complex demo I would be asked to deliver. (They said they were hiring two of these roles every month to keep up with growth.) An offer seemed assured were these subsequent interviews and my demo to also go well. During my first phone interview I was asked to spend a couple hours getting to know the software and build an example dashboard which I shared with the interviewers although HR failed to hand it off to the next interviewer as I thought they would—after I gave him the dashboard, the second interviewer remarked that he was impressed given I had no background in their particular product but had obviously started to pick it up quickly. The disappointing aspect of the process was that I was an internally referred candidate, and therefore a candidate to treat a bit better; and uniquely well-qualified and well-known from a competitor. However the HR department dropped the ball several times on following up with me. My internal contact had to remind HR twice to contact me after they failed to respond to my follow-ups on more than one occasion. So—After being congratulated and assured more interviews, they dropped the ball again, never following up and not responding to my email wondering about scheduling those promised next two interviews. My internal contact was exasperated and reported the situation to their HR VP. My contact's complaint finally yielded a lackluster HR apology and response asking if I wanted to continue interviewing. I declined at this point, as it seemed they were insincere from the get-go. Perhaps they had second thoughts about my candidacy but they were not forthright about it. The experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth about the organization. It's probably better once you get through the front door but be wary of a recruitment process than might string you along.

      Pregunta 1

Questions were perhaps too easy. A few technical questions about architecture, SSO, Web app tiers, etc. but no challenging questions like "tell me about a project that failed." Both interviews were perhaps suspiciously soft.

      Entrevista

I applied via the Careers page of Tableau Website. I have been contacted by a recruiter who was very friendly and helpful. After that I was invited for a phone interview with the hiring manager who explained more about the position and asked me about my previous technical and consulting experiences and then asked me to do a technical interview over phone as well. The last stage was an onsite Tableau Demo in the amazing office of Tableau in London

      Entrevista

I interviewed with three individuals. One was talking about the position and salary requirements. Second was a team lead that wanted to know about me and my personality. Third was actually a quite odd string of very specific questions about Tableau software. I had only worked a little with the software so most of the questions I did not know, but could at least talk some about the related technologies.

Me postulé a través de una recomendación de un empleado. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Tableau Software (Seattle, WA) en may 2015

      Entrevista

In 2015 I was an internal referral from a top Tableau executive and I also came from a major competitor with unique technology and consulting experience. I was well-qualified for the role but I tried to establish confidence without being presumptuous or arrogant during the interview process. I was excited about the elegant product and the company culture, but I'd been disappointed twice in the past by Tableau's hiring etiquette: first, in 2006 when HR didn't return several phone calls, and again in 2012 when a different employee referred me and I went through a couple interviews that lead to a dead-end of silence from HR. (In 2012 the interview cycle was appearing to go well but Tableau HR went silent mid-way through my interview round, and didn't respond to my emails until I complained my internal referral contact. However, by that point, I was deflated by a few unprofessional snafus that had occurred during the interview cycle, such as the recruiter not sending the hiring manager a dashboard I'd spent a few hours building at HR's request, so I declined to pursue further interview as I felt the people involved were operating insincerely.) Fast forward to 2015 and I decided to try again with the referral of a different employee, this time a top executive. I spoke to HR again, and a week later they put me in touch with a different hiring manager than I'd interviewed with in 2012. I had a one hour interview with her that seemed to go well. Just like in 2012, I was again promised a battery of 4-5 interviews including a product demo interview. Two weeks went by and I heard nothing from her, so I emailed HR. They promised to follow-up with the hiring manager. Another week went by with no further reply from HR. I emailed HR a second time but did not receive a reply. It was precisely the same etiquette shown to me before: interview; then empty promise of more interviews; then HR disregarding further contact. It is hard to guess why they will spend their time and yours to host interviews (or have you spend time building dashboards) that seem to go well, but then they don't follow up on their promises or at least tell a candidate, "thanks, but no thanks." I would respect HR telling me they decided against me as a candidate, however, promising further interviews and then not replying to email or phone calls creates a negative impression of the company. I'd heard from two former colleagues that they both experienced similarly insincere interview processes. Candidates deserve to be treated more respectfully than this.
