      Entrevista para Software Engineer

      18 jul 2017
      Candidato de entrevista anónimo
      San Francisco, CA
      Sin ofertas
      Experiencia negativa

      Solicitud

Me postulé a través de un reclutador. Acudí a una entrevista en Symphony Commerce (San Francisco, CA)

      Entrevista

The entire process was a waste of time and recruiter always seemed confused. I was invited for a recruiting event in their office at San Francisco. I was asked to take a coding challenge to put myself ahead from others before the recruiting event. It was a simple one, and I did it immediately. But at the recruiting event, I was not questioned anything about the challenge, neither did I have anyone to talk to about it. Instead, there was a workshop where we were asked on how we would design a web page, given some APIs. The discussion was good and I got good feedback from them immediately. Surprisingly, I was not contacted back about it for until a week, after which I emailed the recruiter. The recruiter then set me up for a phone interview with one of their engineers. It seemed like the interviewer did not know anything about my previous coding challenge or the workshop at their office. However, the interview went well and they sent me yet ANOTHER coding challenge and also set me up for an on-site interview. I was given an interview itinerary, so I submitted the coding challenge and went for the interview. Again, the process seemed very chaotic and none of the interviewers knew they were supposed to interview me, neither were they mentioned in my interview itinerary. The first interviewer pulled up my resume in front of me, reviewed it and started talking to me. The interviewer asked me to write a program, but was very silent throughout the time I was coding it on whiteboard. I was thinking out loud, but it felt like I was talking to the walls. Absolutely no feedback, whatsoever. I had good discussion with my next two interviewers. My last interview was supposed to be about my second coding challenge, which was cancelled. Funnily, the coding challenge was front-end project whereas the role was for back-end engineer. After two coding challenges, one workshop onsite and one phone interview, I did not except the on-site interview to be unprofessional.

I am sorry to read that you felt the experience was a negative one. This was a disheartening review for me to read as we as a team put so much into creating a valuable event for female engineers to learn about our startup. During the event there was a panel and three of our leading female engineers spoke about their experience and shared advice for people early in their career. We also created workshop sessions so that participants could gain perspective on the types of problems they would be working on at Symphony Commerce or potentially other startups. The coding challenge you completed did “put you ahead of the others” and sorry that it was not clear the event would not focus on the challenge. It was a bad decision to send you multiple coding challenges and I apologize for that. For the onsite interview, it sounds like you had two positive interviews and one interview that you would have liked more of a dialogue than them giving you quiet time to work out the problem. That is great feedback and I shared it with the team so that we don't do that in the future. Thank you for taking the time to get to know our team. Since the event in March, we have been focusing on building more mentorship on our team. We have recently hired 3 Principal Engineers, Senior Engineers, and a Chief Architect. In 2018 we hope to host another event as the one you attended was our first. Gratefully, Isabel Rasmussen Head of Recruitment

Me postulé en persona. El proceso tomó 2 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Symphony Commerce (San Francisco, CA)

      Entrevista

I was given a coding challenge which I found to be very easy. It was to use their API to build a basic store view and to add a few features that allow filter and sorting. I then spoke with an engineer to explain my thought process. I thought it went well but I never heard back. I had to ask them for my status to find out that I was rejected with no explanation. Overall, it seemed to be a massive waste of time.
