Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 2 meses. Acudí a una entrevista en SlashData (Glasgow, Escocia) en ene 2020

      Entrevista

The interview process with SlashData (for this role) is composed of five stages: 1) Create a presentation of yourself. This is for them to assess whether you can summarise info and make it look catchy. 2) Task - you have 5 hours to analyse some dummy data, answer a few questions, and write a few paragraphs on a topic. In both cases, a good analyst has to come up with their theories based on the exploration of available data. This addresses some comments from other reviews. There is no right or wrong approach, provided that it leads to good insights. It's up to you how you tackle the questions. As a statistician, I felt the need to also test the relations between variables, before attempting any kind of inference. Here you only have 5 hours and they're not looking for perfection. However, five hours go by quite fast so plan ahead. They don't time you, but you should probably do it in the allotted timeframe. Why? Because this task is for them to know that you can do the job, but also for you to understand what kind of data and tasks you will be working with. You don't want to get a job that leaves you unfulfilled. And they don't want someone who is not committed as part of their team either. By doing this task, you will also learn how much is requested of you. If you cheat, I guess you will learn how much unpaid overtime you'd have to work to keep your job LOL Having said that, take into account that, the more you do something, the faster you get. To be honest, it took me an extra half an hour but that's because I was not familiar with survey data so I had to do some research beforehand. Since you're reading this, prepare in advance. This is a valuable learning experience and probably my favourite part of the interview. 3) Wonderful Christina, who is the head of Research at SlashData and oversees all the operations, gives you feedback on the task. She has a look at your code, she comes up with some comments, ... This is something I appreciated as many other companies do not. After spending a lot of time doing the analysis, it's good to get constructive criticism, which will help you later on whether they offer you a job or not. Christina also wants to have a conversation about your qualifications and your aspirations, and she will tell you what SlashData does. She will roughly explain (if you ask) how the data is collected, how it is cleaned, what clients they work with, what you would like to focus your attention on while working for the company (ML, AI, ...). This task is for you to get feedback and to learn more about the company, and for them to see if you are a good fit for their company culture. 4) Since they are obsessed with company culture, you will talk to their CEO. Andreas is responsible for setting the company's vision. To him, company culture, personal development and employee satisfaction is the #1 priority. We had a very nice chat. 5) If you've made it this far, you will talk to Sarah, their "people person". I used this occasion to check whether Andreas' vision matches what employees think. After all, she deals with HR. I was extremely happy to obtain data-driven answers, i.e. backed by stats. She mentioned the frequent meetings that people at SlashData have, their way to tackle the problems arising from the jobs being remote. She is taking a lot of steps towards improving the company and she wants you to know that all feedback is welcome. So she will ask for your feedback on the overall interview process. She also knows a lot about the team, so ask away. This is another check that you are a good fit for the company and the occasion to ask any unanswered questions. I was offered the job but I am not an employee at SlashData as I received an offer from another company which is more compatible with my background. They were very understanding, as their goal is to get people with the right attitude. I am reviewing the interview process so that you give their team a chance. Take into account that the process is long (~2 months I think), so make sure that you are interested in this job before starting. It will save both you and the company some time. Suggestion for Sarah: I understand the reasons behind the steps and their order. Everything is clearly thought through, and whoever is reading this can surely see that I learned a lot about the company. As much as I loved it, though, this is the longest interview I had. Is there maybe a way to shorten the process? Good luck with your interview! In my opinion, these guys are great.
