Seemed like a shady attempt to collect market research. The interviewers didn't have any information on what the position was. The interviewers (Traders) didn't know how his work was connected to the companies bottom line, or how the bottom line was connected to his pay. Seemed odd that a quant shop wouldn't have a quantitative pay structure.
