Contacted by an HR colleague at a different affiliate (Samsung Group runs 35 different affiliates or lines of business). She didn't know much about the affiliate I interviewed for because it is a new business for Samsung the western world. A month went by before I heard from her again (after holiday season) to come in to meet with the team that had just arrived from Korea. Met on a panel interview style with 2 members from Korea and the colleague who originally reached out to me. Three weeks later there was another interview with a panel of 7 male Korean executives. I had to speak through an interpreter as they only spoke to me in Korean. Very intimidating and felt like a military interrogation. Two or three weeks later I met with one more male Korean executive who had not come in the previous visit. Despite this multiple interviews it was not clear which line of business this particular affiliate was in. Even though I was provided a copy of a power point presentation, none of it really clearly explained what this particular affiliate did or why they were thinking of entering the Americas' market (South & North). At this point it had been 3 months since I was initially approached. It would be another 3 weeks before I received a written offer which I still had to negotiate. I was asked to provide a copy of my tax returns to verify my previous income which was shocking. Despite demonstrating I had earned in the 6 figure range I was given an offer for $30K less than what I asked for. I was told this was because this was a small group without any revenues. So what was the point of verifying what I made if they were going to offer whatever they wanted? None really except in Korea they verify everything, even family information, etc. My start date was postponed by 2 weeks due to a business trip from the expat who hired me. However, in the middle of his trip to Korea he called me to ask me to do some research and report for him to present to some executives in the Headquarter offices. When I asked him that this surely meant I will be getting paid as if I had started on the date he called to ask me to do this work, he said no. He said I should consider this a favor to him. That right there should have been a red flag that the culture is very resistant to embrace or adhere to the customs, practices and laws of the countries they choose to operate in.
