Disappointing recruitment experience.
As a senior recruiting professional exploring a transition into Employer Relations, I approached this opportunity with genuine interest and significant preparation.
During the phone screen, I was asked very few questions, and none that directly assessed my qualifications against the role’s stated requirements. The conversation focused primarily on my current employer rather than on evaluating my candidacy for the position. I was informed that while my skills might be transferable, there were many candidates with direct Employer Relations experience, and I should not expect to hear back.
My interview took place on 12/5/25. As of 1/28/26, I have not received any formal follow-up communication indicating whether I was selected. As a recruiting professional, I believe timely and clear closure is an important part of a respectful candidate experience, regardless of outcome. Personally my professional brand consists of me calling every single candidate to decline post interview even after the phone interview stage. While I don't expect every employer to hold the same standard, I would expect an email at minimum.
Additionally, I was encouraged to recruit students and attend university events, which contributed to my perception that the discussion was not fully centered on assessing fit for the role itself.
I am sharing this experience to provide transparency for future candidates and to encourage that Rutgers provide a more consistent, role-aligned interview process and to only engage candidates when they are truly under consideration for a position.
