      Entrevista

Red flags were sprinkled through this company's process, but regrettably I did continue with it. The screening was relatively easy, however the actual 'interview' involved doing an off-interview project that I had a few days to submit. I am leery of any interview that requires a project outside of their time, so this was the first red flag, but I went ahead with it anyway. For some additional context, at a previous company I had full ownership of a product based on a similar technical stack as required, and am a relatively seasoned software engineer. I still have a lot to learn and improve on, but I'm not new to the field. Second red flag was I was told it shouldn't take more than 4 hours. First, even requesting four hours is an insult and I almost stopped there, but I figured might as well have some fun. The goal was to create a task management system to show state management using ReactJS. An important note for any engineers reading this is I used Redux for managing account state. Long story short, I submit this after Q/Aing it, and within about 6 hours I received 4 lines of feedback from their 'lead' which were completely unrelated or ambiguous, this literally could have been copy and pasted. There was even a line accusing me of some prop drilling patterns that were impossible to accomplish with the redux state implemented the way it was. I love feedback, and I continue to interview even when I am happily employed to stay sharp and talk with folks in the industry, but this was a complete joke and an insult to my time as an applicant. If I take even 2 hours to do a project, I deserve more than 4 lines of plain text e-mail. This company is still hiring today, and I have no doubts as to why. If you are contemplating on applying, I'm not telling you not to, because maybe things have changed. However, if you see any of what I've outlaid on the horizon during your interview process just save yourself the trouble. If they don't value your time as an applicant, they certainly won't as an employee.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a detailed review. We appreciate your feedback. We understand that some may be hesitant to complete a project or test during the interview process, so we would love to shed some light here. We use asynchronous projects to evaluate a candidate's technical skills for multiple reasons: 1. It's flexible and allows candidates to represent themselves without the pressure of live coding or white board exercises. 2. It's representative of how we work day-to-day as a fully-remote company. 3. We prefer practical and applicable technical skills rather than theoretical challenges. Thanks to all of the feedback we have received including yours, we recently updated our technical screening process. We now use a best-in-class third party to design and grade our technical challenges and candidates are able to complete the technical interview on their own time in two hours or less. We hope our applicants are as excited about this as we are! Thank you again for the feedback and for helping us improve. We wish you the very best! -Cailee and Nic
