I applied to half a dozen schools at the same time in summer of 2010 and had already accepted an adjunct lecturer position somewhere else when Oklahoma Christian School (OCS) called. Mike Hawkins, who was the principal of the middle school at the time, called and set up an in-person interview. Mr. Hawkins walked me through the empty school building and then turned to me, looked me in the eye, and said, "God wants you here." I was qualified for the job, but the calmness and conviction with which he spoke caught me off guard. I told him I needed some time to make a decision, since I had already accepted a position as an evening lecturer at another school. After looking through the curriculum and carefully considering the extra responsibility having two jobs would involve, I called Mr. Hawkins back and accepted the position. A week later, I met with the headmaster of the school, who at the time had the responsibility of confirming new hires. In the six years since the interview, the school has seen full turnover in its leadership, and I wouldn't expect new hires to have the same experience I did. The school is currently a good match for teachers who want a culture similar to that of public schools but with a Christian emphasis in some areas.
