      Entrevista

The interview process at NiceJob was the most obtuse and bizarre experience interviewing for a tech job I have ever had. The process was like this: after applying I was responded with an automated message saying my "resume has made it to the second round of hiring". I was asked to to to a page and record a series of 1 minute videos of myself answering a series of often irrelavent questions. Some questions were related to my work experience, some were strange hypothetical situations asked, I suppose, to reveal my personality. "This is a new one," I thought, but I submitted my answers and moved on. One day later I was answered with an automated email. "After reviewing your first video interview we'd like to advance you to the next stage." The next stage however, was yet another series of recorded video clips where I record myself answering even more, often irrelavent questions and submitting them. At this point mind you I haven't actually technically spoken to anyone at the company. NiceJob is not a large company and I find it hard to believe that this process is actually saving them time (someone apparently, would be reviewing nearly 2 hours of my videos, rather than speaking to me directly). I emailed back and said I'd like to speak to someone before I continue, as I have questions about the company myself (I would also know if I would like to work there). Eventually, I got in touch with their head of HR. Finally, I actually had a proper interview (it was technically the third, - or fourth, if you include the HR talk), where I could actually speak to the person hiring. It was several of them interviewing me by video-chat. The questions were similar to the sometimes irrelevant questions in the video chat. No technical questions. Everything seemed to be going well until the inevietable "why would you like to work here". At this point, I had not visited their office, and I know them to be a smaller marketing company in Vancouver. I thought there might be a decent place to work despite the interview process and I was looking for a job in Van as I was moving there soon (they already knew I was in Toronto at the time). I don't think this was good enough for the main hiring person however. His face dropped a bit. I guess he wanted to hear it was my 'dream job'. In the end I was not offered the job. When I asked why, I was told it was not their policy to 'give reasons'. All in all, the interview process at NiceJob has stood out to me as being the absolute worst interviewing experience in my years in this industry. Their attidude of asking applicants to jump through performative hoops seems regressive for such a small company. I got the imperession that a group of young guys got some early seed money and became really full of themselves and that they company truly believed working for them was a gift. As someone with 5 years of experience at the time (and really no shortage of companies and recruiters coming to me), I expected to be treated better. It's a basic level of respect, not only for the employer, but also for the employee. Particularly if you're looking to hire talent in an industry where engineers are in high demand. I would suggest, if you're anything above a junior, do not waste your time with NiceJob (lol).

      Entrevista

Phone screening with HR person followed by an interview with the Engineering team and a final technical interview with another Senior engineer. First interview was more about hypothetical situations and questions about my resume. There were some conceptual questions regarding React use cases as well. Both interviewers were friendly although one less than the other. The last interview was a system design question involving caching. It started half an hour later than the scheduled time and went well into night time, which was quite inconvenient. The interviewer however was friendly and collaborative. HR experience was not great. There were some calls scheduled that never happened. They kept stalling between each interview and the whole thing took ages. No feedback provided on the interview despite request. The experience in overall was quite poor. Felt like they were not interested at all and just going through the motions out of favour.

You submit your resume, and you are automatically moved on to the next round where you submit a bunch of videos. It is a waste of a candidate's time because you don't get to gauge the company's culture and dynamic that you learn through a conversation with a real person. They rejected me, but I had no idea for what reason. I feel that if it were a phone interview, I could have guessed where it went wrong, but because this was through videos I had no idea. Had they looked at the candidate's CV first, and filtered candidates through to the next round, it would have been a better experience because the candidate would then know if the candidate at least had the potential to work for the company. The videos take a long time, and it is limited to maximum of 1 minute per question. I understand they are trying to improve the process, but this is just not organic and a complete waste of time.
