      Entrevista

They respond very fast and the process is clear. It's a replacement position and they're not looking for an "additional" data scientist (unlike what is mentioned in the job description). First interview is with HR, which was in German. I guess the aim of this interview is to check the level of my German. They asked very simple questions, which they can answer if they read the CV. It's clear that the person doesn't have any experience in data science term words. It was one of the worst HR interviews I ever had. Halfway through I was convinced it was a scam and stopped giving detailed answers. Funnily, I got invited for the second interview. Second interview is also with another HR person. This time though it was a proper HR interview. I started in German but then asked to switch to English. They don't have a lot of experience hiring data scientists. It seems there is little communication between HR and the DS team. I was told that the hiring manager is a "senior data scientist". Luckily, they gave me the name of the hiring manager and was able to check their profile on LinkedIN. Third interview is a technical interview using a third-party tool. It's fine and takes around 2 hours but doesn't give any idea what is expected at the job. Fourth and final interview is a 2 hours interview with the hiring manager and two senior data scientists. First part is led by hiring manager and asks questions to guess what the job is. Second part is led by one of the senior data scientists and asks questions about my previous experience. They go into details which models were used, what evaluation metrics, ... Third part is led by the other data scientist and asks questions relevant to the job I'm applying for. How to prepare the data? Which models to use? ... The first two parts went really well. The third part however was too abstract and I couldn't follow along. The hiring manager decided to give me another chance to showcase my modelling skills and asked my if I am up for another technical interview, which is not part of the official process. They sent me data and asked me to model it, which they explicitly mentioned it should take 2-3 hours. I received 3 data sets and was expected to do data cleaning, data exploration, data merging, and data modelling in 2-3 hours (BIG red flag). Normally, in technical interview one is expected to receive one dataset, two at most, but three! The hiring manager then called and told me they decided to offer the position to another data scientist that provided a better solution to the data modelling part. It seems they're looking for someone that has experience in the specific type of data modelling they do. Rather than hiring somebody that knows how to think and can learn quickly on the job. Finally, kudos to the team that were very respectful and managed not to laugh when I was asked to answer the questions in German. It was a fun experience and I really enjoyed it :)
