      Entrevista

As many others before me have reported, the overall interview process with Kibin seemed a bit unfair and frustrating. I rarely write reviews, but I felt the need to take the time out of my day to write an honest review for my interview experience with Kibin. I had passed the first stage, which was to provide them with qualifications and credentials along with responses to a few questions. The wait was between a few hours to a day. The next stage was to go through a series of "guideline" sections where they explained how things would look like once we were accepted. Everything seemed pretty fair and straightforward. They advised me not to skim through the guidelines, but to really take the time to understand their expectations and read with care. The overall reading process took about 15 to 20 minutes. The final step in stage two was to successfully complete a "sample editing test." I understand and appreciate that they take this test very seriously, so clients may have high quality, if not the best editors. However, the expectations for this test seemed quite vague and unfair. They did not set specific expectations or lay out exactly what they were looking for. The essay was 12 pages long where the author clearly was not a native English speaker. There was a time limit of 9 hours. Being an ESL professor for 5 plus years and currently working as a college composition professor with a doctorate in English, I have had many experiences revising, editing, and proofreading student essays, especially those of ESL students. Although this particular essay was excruciatingly painful to read, I offered as much critical feedback as they had advised me to do in their "guideline" readings. I nearly spent a good chunk of the day dedicating myself to this sample editing test. I submitted everything on time with care. A few hours later, I receive an email stating that I did not pass. There was no feedback or explanation as to why I had failed the test. Overall, communication with the Kibin team was professional and nice; however, it would have been nice if the editing test had set a more straightforward and strict set of guidelines as to what they were precisely looking for. The other thing to note is that they only allow editors to strictly edit with Microsoft Word, so no Mac users and their Pages.

Hi there, I'm sorry that you feel that our application process was unfair and frustrating. We have made several improvements over the past 18 months to make our vetting process more efficient for both applicants and our internal team, such as reducing the sample edit to a single test (instead of three). We also invite every applicant to request personal feedback on their sample edit upon receipt of the notification. If you have not yet done so, I certainly encourage you to reach out to our team. I do regret that this is not populated in the email by default, which is something we'd love to implement in the future to make our decisions even more transparent. You are correct that the test is difficult and that our standards are high. Unfortunately, there is no good substitute for seeing how an editor performs in a testing environment that mirrors our "live" editing platform. We provide the student's request and other details about the document (such as the style guide) to guide the editor's approach, in addition to the extensive tutorial/guidelines you mentioned. In addition to technical correctness (spelling, grammar, formatting/style), we evaluate the quality and quantity of feedback and commentary. As professional editors, we realize that no paper is every truly "perfect" -- there's always something that can be improved -- so we take a holistic approach as we review the sample edit against these criteria and make the best determination we can about an editor's ability to consistently meet our standards and those of the students we serve. We believe there is always room for improvement, though, so I thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback about the process.
