When I found out there was a position open, I used personal contacts to reach company directors in Canada. I had a previous manager write a letter of recommendation which got me a phone call with the Canadian CEO. We chatted on the phone and he liked me, so I met with him in person when I was in Toronto. It was a difficult negotiation but I got an offer and accepted.
