This was for a construction position. I was offered an interview 7 weeks after first applied for the vacancy via an agency. I was interviewed on the site in the Director's car! At the end of the interview, I specifically asked when I would receive a decision. I was told to expect a telephone call three days later after others had been interviewed. Despite at least five attempts with messages left on the Director's mobile phone, with the agency and at the head office requesting the Director make contact with me - no contact was made and my calls were never returned. Nearly five weeks after my interview, I was called by the Director and offered the position, on a salary level I last earned back in 2006 and £5,000 less than I had said I was seeking at the interview. The company also appeared not to understand that a car allowance and mileage rates were supposed to cover the all cost of using a private car for business use. The mileage allowance first offered didnt even cover the cost of the fuel! Five days after the verbal offer, I called the director to inform him I had not received the written offer. This finally arrived by next day special delivery just two days before I was required to start work. The Offer Letter appeared to be based on a standard letter for an hourly-paid employee and NOT for a senior salaried construction professional. To make matters worse, the mileage rate had been reduced from that which we agreed and there was no mention of any benefits or bonuses other than a 21 days paid holiday.
