An initial email is sent stating that your background looks good, and asking if you're willing to take a proctored assessment as part of the interview process. It requires you to relinquish all of your computer's privacy to ProctorU, where someone watches you via video chat taking the exam. Its incredibly uncomfortable, and after I completed the assessment I was just sent a rejection stating I wasn't a fit meanwhile they never actually spoke to me over the phone. Mind you, this email was sent at 7:00 am on a Saturday morning. When I expressed my disappointment on receiving a cut-and-pasted rejection after wasting my time with this assessment, the recruiter backpedaled and tried to save face by scheduling a call with me but by then the damage was done. If I were to do this over I would have pushed for the company to speak to me on the phone prior to agreeing to take time to complete the assessment. Overall I feel like I dodged a bullet because this was handled very unprofessionally overall.
