      Entrevista

The interview process with ITX took 7 weeks for 3 interviews. Here is a rundown of what happened in that time. During my initial research into the company I listened to some episodes of their podcast. One was around design sprints which I was excited to hear. Expecting a professional presentation I was repulsed to hear an inappropriate "joke" 28 minutes in. If this didn't immediately hit the editing room floor on a public-facing podcast, how is the culture behind closed doors at ITX I wondered? Red flag. I almost cancelled the interview but decided to do it for the practice as it's been 3 years since last going through the job-finding process. After some scheduling issues/errors on their part, we scheduled and conducted my first interview. #1 went well. I really liked the designer & lead I met with, they were kind and a pleasure to get to know. Then before my HR interview (preceded by more scheduling issues on their end) I did more research & to my horror found out the estimated salary for the position was under half of my current salary & the VPs there are making what I make as a senior level employee on the West Coast. So again I almost cancelled but went through with it for the practice. HR interviewer & I talked for a while & things were going fantastic. Then comes the salary portion. I knew there was no point in telling her a desired range so I point blank said "I'm a little high so I'm just going to tell you where I'm at now and we can take it from there." When I told her my current salary plus bonuses etc. she seemed SHOOK. She was polite but cut the interview short & I figured that was the end of that. A week later I got the 3rd interview request. This one was with the VP & Head of Design. I felt it went okay but I've never been less impressed with a potential manager than the Head of Design. I usually take positions where I feel I can learn from my seniors & he had no personality that I could glean from the interview. If you're too busy to interview or have nothing to add it's a better impression to just not be there at all. Remember, your candidates are interviewing you too in the current climate. But as the interview progressed I realized I needed to update my book so as far as the project walk-through portion I feel I left a lot to be desired around presenting up-to-date UI & brand work. (Note to self, update my book this week!) Didn't get an offer & they gave me the standard "we picked someone with closer experience" even though the work they do is exactly the same work that I have been doing for the last 7 years with the same team structure & same industry / software + web work. Day in and day out the designers are doing exactly what I do and how I do it currently. I also know from previous interviews that they are hiring multiple designers so I realize it was a canned response, but I still appreciated the update. Personally I feel it could not have worked out on salary alone and would have been better ended after that discussion. But it was nice to practice for my upcoming ones that are a better fit for me culturally & monetarily. My advice to future candidates is to do your salary research on ITX sooner than I did. If you are at or above the Buffer salary calculator estimates you'll want to get clarity on their range before spending time interviewing. Also 2 out of the 3 interviews had mismatched times that they told me compared to invite times so make sure when you confirm that you repeat the time you think you are meeting at. Overall it was a decent experience & I thank ITX for their time! I hope they find the candidates they are looking for and I am excited about kicking off my job search for my next opportunity.
