A recruiter reached out to me via my website and asked me to apply for the job. An interview was set up with an editor, we clicked, and I applied for the job through the usual routes. I turned in my edit test (suggested time: 5 hours) and followed up less than a week later because I thought the process had gone so well. I received a response after a few days detailed how I wasn't a strong enough writer for the position. The "feedback" felt really aggressive, given that I was headhunted, did not ask for feedback, and have never in my ten years as a writer / editor received such a negative review of my work.

Edit test included writing a full article, a complete pitch, and editing a provided article.
It took awhile. After applying, I received a lengthy writing sample test. I then had a phone interview, and a week later I came in for an interview. There was communication between steps. A few weeks later, I was contacted and was told that the CEO was reviewing final candidates and that he'd be in touch with people in the next few days. I never heard anything.
