Me postulé a través de un reclutador. Acudí a una entrevista en Futurewei Technologies en ago 2022

      Entrevista

I interviewed at Futurewei/Huawei for an Android Solutions Engineering Role. The hiring manager seemed nice enough and conducted a 1 hour general/technical interview discussing my past work experience and also a few Computer Science, Android development fundamentals. I was given a take-home technical challenge after clearing the first interview round. It was supposed to be as simple as taking out a total 2 or 3 hours within the next 3 days to complete the challenge. This take-home assignment involved using some Huawei/Futurewei products in an Android application. However, it turned out that the product itself was extremely buggy, the official documentation and the codelabs for the SDKs were outdated in a lot of cases. The hiring manager sent over a couple of code samples. These code samples did not run as expected with my new Huawei developer account. Despite my emails, the hiring manager was adamant that the product was working perfectly. Later, when i sent sample code and stacktraces - some of the issues got resolved 'silently' - code that didn't work 3 days ago on my system magically started working. I have enough software development experience to figure out when a bug is fixed from the server side without informing the end user of the product. Even at this point the hiring manager insisted that the code is working fine on their device but not sure why it's not working for me. He never accepted the fact that there was a bug from their side. This refusal to accept fault and also not testing the technical challenge itself before giving it to candidates has left me feeling extremely annoyed. I tried working with different versions of their product/SDK(s) to get it working and this took up a large portion of my time because the hiring manager insisted that 'other candidates' were able to get it to work. I know for a fact that this claim is bogus and am aware that there was another candidate interviewing at the same time who was not able to complete the technical challenge for the same reason and had essentially given up. I essentially ended up reporting bugs to the Futurewei team which they probably fixed behind the scenes. I did work that their Quality Assurance team should have done. I put in close to 3 days of work to investigate bugs and read through stack traces and documentation. All of this for no pay. During this time I was simultaneously interviewing for another position - however due to a time crunch I had to decline the technical challenge from another company and opted to attempt the technical challenge given by Futurewei/Huawei. Not only was my time wasted but I also ended up wasting an opportunity at another company. The final straw was when the Hiring Manager informed me that the company has frozen hiring for this position. The news about a hiring freeze wouldn't have been a big deal if I had put in just 2 or 3 hours of my time into the technical challenge - I would have shrugged it off and moved on with my job search. But after having put in about 20+ hours split over many days - it's exasperating. I had to send 10 page pdfs and 4 videos to prove my point about the bugs in the product. The hiring manager probably didn't intend any malice but the lack of structure and forethought into the hiring process left a bad taste. You are wasting my time and creating a bad image for the company - poorly vetted technical challenge, poor quality control within the core product. If the hiring process and quality control remains the same - I would not recommend anybody to join or apply at this company.
