I applied online. Initially thrown off by a phone call whilst I was in the supermarket. I was asked if ‘I had time for a couple of questions about my application or would like to schedule time’. Thinking they were high level questions I said yes no problem. I didn’t realise that I was actually having a pre screening interview and the lady proceeded to ask me at least 6 questions. I was taken off guard. Her final question was then ‘why do you want a career change so late in your career?’ I was completely taken off guard. Firstly I am only 50 and have at least 17 years of my career left and secondly there was no age in my application. I have been fortunate to have retired at 47 but would love to go back to work because I love working. To assume that because I have retired I am late in my career is offensive. Despite the above, I was moved to the next stage which I can only describe as an online ‘speed and accuracy’ test. Whilst I understand the need for a process for efficient wide scale knockout I fail to see how this test correlates to the job requirements and if anyone can fill me in I would appreciate it!! So this is where I was knocked out. I don’t have sour grapes but I am stunned by the whole process (particularly the pre interview). Quite honestly I would expect more from the institution which supposedly protects workers rights. Ageism is NOT ok.
