I am newer to this industry and this was my first funeral job interview. Interviews are already a bit anxiety-inducing, this went a bit above that. My interviewer came off as hostile and asked a few personal and seemingly irrelevant questions about my family that made me uncomfortable, although that wasn’t even the worst part about this interview. I Was also asked 3 different times why I wanted the job, and it felt like they wanted a different answer or didn’t care about listening to me. I was also asked what my main goal was. I answered with confidence and enthusiasm. when I expressed interest in wanting to move up someday and become director and go to school, I got quick pushback on how they were selective about tuition reimbursement + apprenticeship, almost like I shouldn’t even be hopeful. I also got no further details on these opportunities. Just implicit rejection. In fact, most of my answers were met with oddly covert negative feedback or a doubtful questions or comments in return. Strange and disappointing conversation . Overall, I left feeling discouraged and as if the second I entered the room, they already didn’t want to hire me. But I know it wasn’t me, I was punctual, dressed and composed professionally, and did my homework on the industry and the company. I Never had an experience in an interview like this ever. Not sure if it’s just this specific funeral home but If this is any indication of how the culture is or who I would be working for, I’m a bit relieved I never heard back.
