I am currently working in the public sector, and the role was very similar to my current role, but with the addition of delivering training sessions and occasional national travel. My responses to the questions regarding my current salary and salary expectations noticeably came as a shock to the panel, despite me providing a minimum salary of £5k less than what I am currently on. The interview itself was a pleasant and painless experience, but they could have saved me wasting a day's annual leave and themselves time by either stating the salary upfront or requesting applicants' salary expectations at the application stage.
