I actually applied to a different job than the one I was hired for, and when the hiring manager got back to me for a preliminary phone screen he made it clear that he thought I'd be perfect for a different role that wasn't yet publicly announced. Over the next few weeks I spoke with him again, then came into the office for four hours to interview with four separate folks on the team (some remote, some in the office).
