      Entrevista

Went to the Lake District for the assessment day. There were four other applicants there and we alternated tasks throughout the day. This included proofreading, summarising, page design, comparing two textbooks and the interview. Everyone was very nice and made you feel comfortable.

      Entrevista

Over the course of a day, I completed a series of skills-based tasks and an interview at CGP's office in Broughton-in-Furness. The tasks were all relevant to the role and all of the staff were friendly.

      Entrevista

When I was invited to interview I was also set a task to analyse two revision guides; a CGP one and a competitors version, to write a product review report which I would be using on the day to lead a discussion. On the day of my assessment there was six of us for that session. Soon after we arrived we were put into a board room to take a mental agility test comprising of 50 questions which we had 15 minutes to answer. We were told that we were not expected to answer all 50 but to answer as many as possible. The questions ranged from some word sequences, number sequences, maths word problems, word matching etc, all things you should be able to do quite quickly. Once this was finished we were split off and individually rotated around a further five tasks: InDesign assessment - using Adobe InDesign we were asked to re-create a page of a CGP book which was given as a hard copy. All text was provided, the idea was to complete the design aspect. WordStyle - This task involved taking a piece of text which simulated an entry from a teacher and editing the text to be suitable for a CGP book, putting it into simple language, bullet points etc. Proofreading - During this task we were given some pages from a GCSE history book which had some obvious mistakes and some less obvious and asked to proof read them Interview - Each of us were interviewed by two people; one managing editor and a person from the hiring team, they asked questions about choices of A-levels, degree, experience during university, past work and work experience, mostly normal questions. Discussion - this was probably the worst task, it was just me and two people from CGP and it was more like a presentation than a discussion because they largely just left you to talk about your observations about the two books then they would ask quite challenging questions. The whole thing felt quite awkward.

We’re pleased your recent Assessment Day was a positive experience — thanks for your detailed feedback. You’ll have gathered that we take recruitment very seriously, and we prepare a range of tasks to see how well our candidates’ skills fit the role. We don’t want anyone to have an unfair advantage or be misled about what to expect, so for anyone thinking of posting a review about an assessment they’ve attended, please don’t share too much detail. It’s a bit like peeking at your Christmas presents early — spoils the surprise!
