      Entrevista para Senior Software Engineer

Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 3 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Code42 (Minneapolis, MN) en jul 2016

      Entrevista

I was asked to do a coding exercise which I spent about 8 hours doing. I submitted a single page app that utilized some 3rd party API services. The tasks were not too difficult but I wanted to add a reasonable amount of polish to make it look nice. I was asked to come in for a half day, 3-part in-person interview. The first part was a brief intro with an engineering manager for a different group. It seemed unnecessary and I didn't really learn much from it, nor did I really feel like she was asking good questions about me and my work history. Then I discussed my work with a panel of 3 engineers that I would be working with in this position. All of them had been there for less than 3 months--that was the first red flag. Apparently there's been a lot of churn at this company recently and they are building new teams and migrating a lot of legacy software to newer frameworks, but not getting rid of the old stuff--also a huge red flag. Still, I've done that kind of work before and it sounds like they are open to new ideas, so maybe there's an opportunity to make a real positive impact here. Our conversation went well and at the end of this part I was thinking "I could work with these guys, I can learn some stuff from them and probably teach them a few things along the way." They seemed interested and I was too. Then I talked to the CTO. He seemed very stand-offish through our whole conversation. I had a lot of questions for him and his answers centered around how he waited to join the company at just the right time. He didn't seem super interested in building long-term value for the company. In retrospect it's possible they already had someone in mind and they were just pulling me in to see if I was better. Whatever, I've conducted interviews like that myself because you want to make sure you're hiring top talent, but I like to think that I was a lot less transparent than this guy. By the end I knew it could go either way, but I felt like I had a decent shot at either a follow-up or an offer. They never even called me back. I emailed the recruiter three times and she did not respond. I was shocked. This was my first interview for a Minneapolis-based tech company, where I thought people were supposed to be nice. In the 8-10 interviews I've had over the course of my career in New York and San Francisco no one has ever not called or emailed me back. If that's the way they treat people who interview for their company, I'm pretty glad they didn't call me. As a veteran of the tech industry I also see that as an opportunity to help them improve their interviewing process, but perhaps they don't deserve good talent.

      Entrevista

Standard process: HR Phone Screen, Tech Phone Screen, Homework assigned, In-person Interview The homework was written very well to allow for multiple solutions, some better than others. I submitted it a few days before the interview, and during the interview, I talked through my thought process and received some good feedback as well as learned a few things. The interviewers were very thorough and good at what they did. The interview felt more like a two-way conversation.
