Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 1 día. Acudí a una entrevista en Certified Languages Int'l (Portland, OR) en ene 2013

      Entrevista

I made my application and then got a phone interview and two tests. One consisting in the translation of technical words for medicine, law and general practices. The second part of the test was an interpretation of several different medical cases. The second part was more difficult for me, because we could only ask once if we didn't understand anything, but I passed. The oral test is much more difficult that the everyday interpretations, because if we don't understand something, we can ask until it's clear.

A lot of strange vocabularies and sentences which I never use during regular interpretation. The feeling is terrible, the test is not even close to the daily work. And it makes me feel like taking terrible exam in school. I don't understand why they even have two different parts of tests. It should be only one if the test is required.

The skills assessment we’ve developed for healthcare interpreters can seem daunting, but is not set up to be impossible. It’s designed to assess each candidate’s abilities in relationship to other professional interpreters, and was developed in consultation with an independent expert. Parts of the test do gauge a candidate’s knowledge of medical terminology and ability to handle complex or lengthy medical discussions, and other parts simulate real calls that an over-the-phone interpreter might expect to take. The developers of the assessment understand that an interpreter will not have perfect knowledge of all medical terminology in any language and that the best interpreters must request repetition and clarification while interpreting. This idea is built into how candidates are evaluated. There are two parts of the test, the first part is much shorter than the second, and not all candidates will move to the second part. This segmentation helps us more quickly differentiate between candidates with experience, especially since for many languages, we receive a large number of applications. We’re definitely working to expedite the testing and interview process for the benefit of those who submit resumes.

Most of the first exchage is done via email. You are then set up with a test mostly medical terminology. The test is divided in three parts, single vocabulary, sentences and then long sentences.

Because it is a test against a recorded machine, you have a set amount of time very quickly to render in the other language. I found the test to be very difficult, specially the last part with paragraphs of up to 4 or 5 sentences said very quickly. The last part of the test is design to test your reaction when you miss information, do you give up or do you continue regardless of having missed information. Mainly medical terminology and environments. CLI calls are mostly medical. I did very good in the test.
