The interview was ok, but very atypical for a product interview and felt a bit like they were trying to trick you. They asked very little about past experience. The people were generally friendly
Thanks for leaving your review. At CarGurus, we aim to provide all candidates with enough information and preparation materials prior to their interview so nothing feels out of the ordinary. I’m sorry to hear that you feel we missed the mark on this. - Sam Schatz, Recruiting Manager

My interview experience with CarGurus was one of the most disorganized and disrespectful processes I have encountered in my career.
I applied in September and did not hear back until October. From there, the process dragged on for months. I completed two separate hour-long screens over two weeks with the recruiter and hiring manager. Two weeks after that, I participated in a virtual panel consisting of four back-to-back interviews. Then came the in-person final round with three members of leadership. The highlight of that day? My recruiter simply did not show up. Not late—absent. No message, no explanation.
After the final round, communication stopped completely. I followed up after more than 10 business days of silence and finally received a response in December: “Very positive feedback from the team!” Immediately followed by a rejection. The recruiter then pivoted into, “You’d be perfect for another role we’ll be opening soon.” I expressed interest. They proceeded to ghost me again for over a week with no follow-up and no clarity.
The compensation only added insult to injury. For a role targeting 8+ years of experience and a Manager-level background, they offered an IC3 band of $100–130K. In Boston. In 2025. Hard to view that as anything other than a lowball.
TL;DR:
Three months, four rounds of interviews, a recruiter no-showing my final onsite, contradictory “very positive” feedback followed by rejection, a non-existent role dangled as consolation, more ghosting, and compensation that does not remotely align with the level of experience they claim to be seeking. This process demonstrated a lack of respect for candidates’ time, experience, and professionalism. Proceed with managed expectations.

"We know our salaries are below market, but we have a nice new office and free lunches. Are you OK with that, and being onsite 4 days a week?"

Simple and straight forward though I didn’t make it to the next round. Was very excited about the opportunity. For a first round interview the questions were standard and the to the point.
