Applied for a Senior Solutions Architect. During the phone interview the interviewer mentioned this is for a Solutions Architect position. I didn't think too much of it at the time. After the interview I checked with the recruiter and basically I was interviewing for a different position that i was initially setup for. I explained this to them, and they said its the same hiring manager so nothing changes. Anyways onto the interview. Based on the job spec my experiences fit in very well especially what they were looking for someone with a specific industry experience which is my current role. I have a software development background so I expected questions to be along those lines. To my horror I felt the interviewer was just rattling off random questions like the last 60 seconds in Sale of the Century. I felt rushed and accordingly I gave very short answers. The questions felt unstructured and just very random and theoretically. To be honest I've recently got both my AWS Solutions Architect Associate and Professional certificates and felt they were much easier. I expected questions more along the sides of the certifications and scenario based questions. They did not even ask about my experiences nor go through my resume. I felt the questions did not give me an opportunity to demonstrate my skill-sets and experience. The line of questioning are the type of questions I got when I was applying for a graduate position. For Solution Architects its more about working with customers and providing solutions (as opposed to knowing what a hypervisor is). I'm not one to blame others and always accept responsibility for myself. But in this case I was totally baffled and just stunned. Im just thinking is it the luck of the draw getting this interviewer or do I really need to know stuff like this inside out. Also I must add a colleague of mine recently got an offer for a Cloud Architect position and he was totally shocked by what I told him. His most technical question that was asked was "Can you explain what happens when you click the Search button on the Google page". In my 20 years experience interviews were a process to match a candidates experiences / skill-sets to a role and questioned accordingly to ascertain this. This one is clearly not the case.
