Ventajas

Some days were not horrible. I wish I could put a real pro here, but from day one, bizzare things happened. --Every so often being able to view the antiques downstairs was nice, but the women in foreclosures referred to themselves as "Flowers in the Attic." --The auctioneers (not the owners) were funny, and they helped eliminate the sense of isolation and bad feelings there. --Work week/days allowed for work life balance, but most were so traumatized it was tough. The job never left your mind. Constant fear...but the work week was 9-5, so technically, that's good. --Pay was good, benefits ok

Desventajas

--Belittling behavior, mean, screaming, cursing, constant odd accusations ("Did you put that folder there!" (It may have been at a right angle as opposed to parallel in a spot as someone was reviewing it. Adult women cried in the parking lot or had ranting sessions after work and at lunch on a regular basis. ( I thought it was awesome that they seemed to hire a lot of women who were single, some older. It didn't take long to realize that it was more about hiring people who would keep quiet rather than risk their jobs.) --Employees were encouraged to tattle on one another. If you didn't tattle, it was assumed that you were covering up mistakes for people. An atmosphere that cultivated paranoia. --Micro managed to the point of being told how to sit in order to type. (Told to grown women with decades of employment history.) --Hostage to listening to extreme political opinions. and nasty jokes that were not funny. --Brothers in a constant state of disagreeing with one another. If you helped a brother handling another department (Real estate, carpets or auctions), you could expect backlash from another brother.

Ventajas

I worked at Alex Cooper full time for almost two years in their auction department. Alex Cooper was a great place to work - I learned a lot professionally. I met many interesting people and formed bonds with clients. I was also able to develop my own interests/skills working with different objects. The specialists there are very knowledgeable and happy to share their interests, research, and experience with their peers and customers. The auction schedule is fast-paced, so every day was different - whether I was driving with a colleague to PA or NYC to look at potential items for consignment; facilitating a move of objects to the storeroom; or cataloging objects for sale. Overall, it was a good place to work. My salary was competitive and benefits were good.

Desventajas

Intense schedule leading up to auctions
