How would you handle low performing employees?

If I have low performing employees I try to evaluate if it's a mistake on my part in regards to their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe they are working on something that's not in their wheelhouse. I like PIPs if they are done right. A tactic that has worked for me in the past is partnering low performers with a high performer to provide mentoring.
