Hydrogen and oxygen enter the anode and cathode respectively through the fuel cell flow fields. Hydrogen undergoes oxidation, and the H+ ion passes through the PEM while the free electron goes through a connected circuit and creates a current. The H+ ion, electron, and oxygen react together at the cathode to produce water.
