I see them as not being the same. They can be held by the same people, but require distinctly different skills and results. Marketing encompasses all the things that enable sales,: the product planning and positioning, the pricing, the competitive analysis, the communication to the target markets. Sales requires deep understanding if your target customer needs and how to explain that your products/solutions solve their problems or fit their needs.
