The code challenge was to go through a pre-existing function and clean it up to perform specific tasks. If there's time, then add additional functionality or optimize. The optimization that was asked for at the end was already implemented in the solution. Which seemed like an odd ask, like the Eng wasn't paying attention to what got created in the interview.
