SafeNet tries to make the digital world a safer place. The company provides security products that protect network communications, intellectual property, software applications, and personal identity. Its software and hardware systems employ encryption technology in USB identity tokens and smart cards, virtual private networks (VPNs) and security appliances, and software antipiracy and digital rights management products. SafeNet's customers include financial institutions, government agencies, and corporations. Clients have included Adobe, Nokia, Cisco, US Department of Defense, and the IRS. Private equity firm Vector Capital took SafeNet private in 2007. SafeNet was acquired by Gemalto in January 2015.
