I first applied to the Strings Editor position, which I was incredibly qualified for, but received an email in a couple weeks informing me that that position had gone in-house (so they wasted everyone's time by advertising it), but they had another position I might be interested in and asked if I would consider it. They had me submit writing samples and come in to interview, even though they didn't even have the job duties for the "audience engagement editor" solidified. I came in to interview at the office in Point Richmond with the editorial director, and then he informally pulled in one of the other editors in later to come in and talk about the publications. The actual interview was rather relaxed and low key, although it felt more that they were talking up the magazine rather than asking me about my qualifications. After the interview, I didn't hear back from them, so I emailed to see how they were coming along in the whole process, and they informed me that they "would let me know." I never heard back from them, and after some research, it appears that not only does this company hire almost exclusively in house, they have a number of positions that are filled by people with the same last name as the head of the operation, David Lustermann. Not only did the company feel disorganized in its hiring process, the extreme nepotism here wastes everyone's time and will cause them to ultimately lose out on good talent. Don't waste your time applying here.
